Running along the coast north of Boston, the Rockport Line is one of the more scenic lines. Also known as the Gloucester Branch, the Eastern Railroad built it as far as Gloucester in 1847, branching off the main line at Beverly Junction. The Rockport Railroad extended the branch the rest of the way to Rockport in 1861. Curiously, for a long time trains were turned at Rockport using a long loop track, rather than a wye or turntable. The loop was abandoned in 1962 after Budd RDCs took over the service.
