Caption:Todaiji again. This is one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. It was built without any nails at all, using just well-designed wooden joints to hold everything together. Computer analysis of the joints has revealed that the building is capable of surviving typhoons and earthquakes that would level modern buildings. It's still vulnerable to fire, though. It's predecessor (which was about 1/3 wider) and the two pagodas which flanked it burned to the ground a few centuries ago.
