Gantlet tracks are used where lateral clearances dictate the use of a single-track right-of-way, but for various reasons it eitrher doesn't make sense or is undesireable to install switches and make a true single-track line. As you can see, the builders crossed two of the rails over each other and brought the tracks close together, but didn't make them join together into one track.
