North
Station was originally opened in 1893 to replace four older stations in
the same area used by the Boston & Maine and the Fitchburg
Railroads (B&M had previously absorbed the Eastern and Boston &
Lowell railroads, and later absorbed the Fitchburg as well). In 1928
the station headhouse was demolished to make way for the Boston Garden
sports arena. The current North Station opened in 1995 with the
completion of the Fleet Center (now TD Garden), built 9 inches north of
the old Boston Garden. The current station has twelve tracks, but only
the first ten are currently useable; the last two were never connected
to the approach tracks. Besides the MBTA, Amtrak’s Downeaster to
Portland, Maine also terminates at North Station. |
