Caption: A closer view of 51's nose. The headlight above the windshield is a gyralight, a type of headlight with rotating beams. Gyralights and similar Mars lights were popular for many years as a way of making approaching trains more noticeable. Most railroads have phased them out in favor of ditch lights, which have no moving parts to maintain as they just flash alternately. The T equipped its GP40WH-2s with ditchlights when they arrived from lessor MotivePower. The gyralights are no longer used, but it has been reported that they are still operational. (January 24, 2012)
